Biography: 

Penny Werthner, PhD, has been consulting with athletes and coaches since 1985, working within the sports of Athletics, Canoe/Kayak, Rowing, Diving, Women’s Water Polo, Freestyle Ski, Speed Skating, Curling, Women’s Hockey and Women’s Soccer over the span of many World Championships and 13 summer and winter Olympic Games (from 1988 winter Olympic Games in Calgary to the 2016 summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro and the 2018 Olympic Games in PyeongChang).

Werthner is a former Olympic athlete in Athletics (representing Canada at the 1976 Summer Olympics in the 1,500m and the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow, if Canada had not boycotted the Games). She won bronze medals in the 800m at the 1971 Pan American Games and 1979 Pan American Games, and the 1500m at the 1978 Commonwealth Games. She was a member of Canada’s national Athletics team from 1970-1980. 

Werthner is also currently the Dean of the Faculty of Kinesiology at the University of Calgary. Her research is in the area of lifelong learning, particularly in the areas of high-performance coaches, leadership, women and sport, and the use of heart rate variability biofeedback and neurofeedback for optimal performance.
